David Gates
Over educated as a landscape architect and urban designer, who ran an office of 50 people in the Bay Area for 40 years. In the process of retiring, I began a new career as a painter sculptor. Being trained in the visual arts, and basically drawing and sketching every day For 40+ years painting was a logical extension of my day-to-day enjoyment. Thus after five years of painting, both acrylics in oils, I now consider myself a full-time painter. As a landscape architect, my focus is always been the natural environment as abstracted by cultural patterns. Orchards Vinyards geometry on the organic natural environment is the prime subject of my work working in pastels oils and acrylics both as a plein air painter and studio painter. My works very in size from small plein air in the field to work up to 3 x 3 and 4 x 4. Large two dimensional art and my professional career also brought me to the University of California as a faculty member for 10 years, thus I have ended up teaching art, which is similar to teaching landscape architecture and urban design. Visually my goal is to create impressionist/abstractions of the landscape, which basically are taking the basic bones of nature, extending it, pushing its limits and abstracting it in a way that tells a greater truth about what we see )not photography)which is a realistic version of seeing the world. My goal is to create the impression of what I want you to see …that is creating feelings and emotions about what makes its way to the canvas.
